WA Plastic Takeaway Container Ban – Exemption Ends 31 August 2026

The temporary exemption for certain plastic takeaway containers used for hot, liquid or soupy foods ends on 31 August 2026.

Until then, plastic containers or lids may only be used under the exemption where the food:

  • is soupy or liquid and can be poured, and
  • is served above 60°C or intended to be reheated above 60°C.

Examples include hot soup, laksa, curry and gravy-based dishes.

From 1 September 2026

Businesses will need to use compliant alternative packaging for hot and soupy takeaway food.

We recommend reviewing your packaging now and testing suitable alternatives before the exemption ends. Check that your replacement containers and lids provide adequate heat resistance, leak resistance and safe transport.
